a.     One ribbon is 2 5/8m long and the other one is 1 1/8m long.  What is the total length?

2 5/8 + 1 1/8 = 

Step 1: add the whole numbers: 2 + 1 = 3

Step 2: add the fractions: 5/8 + 1/8 = (5 + 1)/8 = 6/8

Step 3: combine whole number and fraction 3 6/8 = 3 3/4

 

 

b. Kwok puts 4 ¼ kg of chicken and 

2 ¾ kg of broccoli in a shopping basket.  What is the total weight?

 

Step 1: add the whole numbers: 4 + 2 = 6

Step 2: add the fractions: 1/4 + 3/4 = (5 + 1)/8 = 4/4

Step 3: combine whole number and fraction 6 4/4 = 7
