Think of five ways to deal with this problem

1)    Add an extra slot (put one more letter)

2)    Personal plates, CAR4U or KWOK8

(8 in Chinese means wealth or money

Can be all letters

4 – in Chinese mean ‘die’

- extra $250 per year

 

3) Change the background colour to blue, white text

4) Background colour can be red 

(diplomats – officals working for another country)

 

5) Mix the letters and numbers

(each slot has a total combination of 26 + 10 = 36)

 

e.g. A3B5 C6F

6) Add symbols to the plates, e.g. I U

 

Some symbols cannot be used ! (look a lot like the letter I), #, ?, $ (S)

-there is a condition, A first, then 10. We multiply the probability

 

A – 10

 

4 Aces/52 cards, 4/51 (51 cards left after one card is taken out)

 

4/52 x 4/51 = (4x4)/(52x51) = 16/2652 or 0.006 or 0.6%

 

 

b.    What is the probability of picking three “7” cards in a row from a deck?

7-7-7 (after a card is taken out, it will not be put back to the deck)

 

4/52 (four “7” cards in a deck), 3/51, 2/50 (only two “7” are left, with 50 cards)

 

4/52 x 3/51 x 2/50 = (4x3x2)/(52x51x50) = 24/132600 = 0.0001 or 0.01% (almost impossible)

How do living organisms interact with each other?

 

1)    Competition

e.g. In a pond (small body of water) has enough food for a small number of fish

If there are too many fish, not enough food

- weak one will not survive

- big fish eat the small fish; Kwok eats the big fish

- some fish will swim elsewhere

- common in the spring (most fish lay eggs, and hatch in the spring) 

 

 

- plants also compete with each other: for nutrients in soil, sunlight, water

- too many plants: smaller, shorter and thin

- those that are grown under the shade (not enough Sun – smaller, thin, weak)

 

2)    Predation – predators and prey (victim, be killed)

e.g. in an area with too many predators (e.g. wolves) – not enough food (rabbits, deer). Either the wolves starve and die slowly or find another area with food

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3)    Mutualism – both organisms benefit from each other

- e.g. honey bees and flowers (bees pollinated the flowers so that the plants bear fruits)

- bacteria and plants in the legume family (bacteria provide nitrogen to the plants for them to grow better)
