Real life application of exponents

There are eight squares in this rectangle.  If the length of each square is 3cm, calculate the area of the rectangle.  Show your work.

            The perimeter of this square is

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20cm

 

The area is

52 = 5 × 5 = 25cm²

 

 

A field is divided into four equal squares.  If the length of the whole field is 12km,  calculate 

 

 

 

- the area of the whole field

 

- the area that is needed to grow carrots

 

- the perimeter that is needed to fence the corn growing area

 

-  if all four growing areas are fenced with wires, how much wire (length) is needed? [ans: 72km]
