High School Specialized Programs (tdsb.on.ca)

 

Pros

- students who share the same interest and passion to work together in the next four years

- specialized teachers to teach you specific subjects (Math teachers will only teach math)

- more ready and prepared for post secondary education

 

 

Cons

- the schools may be far from your house (you may have to spend 45mins taking the bus there each morning)

- a lot of work on top of the everyday workload (grade 9 should have about 90mins of homework each night)

- some schools may have bad repetitions in the past (e.g. the west end High Schools)

 

 

What's available?

1.     Africentric Schools

2.     Arts focus schools (music, dance, drama, visual arts, media) - auditions

3.     Cyber Arts (75% arts, 25% computer technology)

4.     Elite Athlete programs (for those who compete at the national and international levels)

5.     IB progams (if you want to study or work outside Canada in the future)

6.     STEM (enriched Math, Science, Technology)

7.     Advanced Placement (AP) – take university level courses in high school

 

How to apply?

- by end of October in your grade 8 year

- must write entrance exams and/or auditions and/or interviews

- highly competitive (e.g MACS program, 1200 apply, 60 get in)

- entrance exam from mid November to mid January

**** in the TDSB, you can only apply to TWO specialized programs
