BP Deepwater horizon accident


The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska, resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of seabirds and thousands of marine mammals. While precise total numbers are impossible to determine, scientific estimates of the immediate wildlife toll include:
  • Seabirds: An estimated 250,000 (with ranges from 100,000 to over 500,000).
  • Sea Otters: Approximately 2,800 to 3,500.
  • Harbor Seals: Around 300.
  • Bald Eagles: Approximately 250.
  • Killer Whales (Orcas): Up to 22 (from the AB pod).
  • Fish and Others: Billions of salmon and herring eggs, along with countless invertebrates.
