Homework tonight

1)    When was the last time when C$100 = US $100 (at par)

2)    What are the five most important imports we buy from USA (in mil dollars). How much do we buy from the USA?

March 2, 2022

How will exchange rates affect us when we don’t travel? (goods, freight)

-       Most of the goods, including grocery, electronics, clothing, shoes, furniture, are manufactured outside Canada

-       Most of the items in your house are from China (at least 80%)

-       How will the change in exchange rate affect the price of food? Electronics? Shoes?

-       Answer: Weak C$, food and other goods will be more expensive for us to buy

-       On the other hand, strong C$, food and other goods will be cheaper for us to buy but there is a supply issue today. Things will get more expensive

-       Right now, March 2022, C$ is pretty strong

Kwok’s note:

-       We bought a lot of agriculture products (farming goods) from the US and Mexico

-       When C$ is cheap (lower exchange rate against USD and Peso), the agriculture products (fruits and vegetables, meat) will be more expensive for everyone in Canada because it costs more to buy them from USA and Mexico (between 2017 to 2020, steaks are very expensive in the last few years)

-       On the other hand, when C$ is expensive (buy less USD and Peso), these products will be cheaper for us to buy in Canada

- Grade 7 Science: Heat

- why do we import fruits and vegetables to Canada in the winter? Too cold to grow anything except when they are planted in greenhouses

- greenhouse: glass walls, glass roof, so the heat can be trapped inside even it is cold outside

(-10°C)

- heat is transferred in three ways

(1) Conduction: heat up a metal spoon, the handle will be warm after a few minutes

(plastic handle or wooden handle – heat insulator. They transmit heat slowly)

(2) Radiation: heat sources from the Sun will go through glass wall/windows and the heat is trapped inside. Heat is trapped inside a hot car (outside 30°C, inside the car 45°C). So hot, you can bake cookies inside the car

- inside the greenhouse, it is warmer with 24 hours of light (Ontario and rest of Canada) – tomato plants, pepper, cucumbers, flowers. Much more expensive to operate ($3.99/pound hot house tomatoes that are grown in Ontario)

- tomato capital of Ontario: Leamington, Ontario (about 3.5 hours SW of Toronto)
