Assignment Today
- find how many cars are sold in Canada last year (2021)
- out of those cars, how many are electric vehicles
- out of those cars, how many are hybrid vehicles
Electric Vehicles (e.g. Tesla, Nissan Leaf, GM Volt, Toyota Prius Prime and others)
- run only on electric power
- charge at night for a few hours
- fully charged battery is good for about 200km to 300km (gasoline car range is about 600km)
- battery holds less charge during the winter (<0°C), range drops to 150km to 250km
- no pollution, the electric cars are more expensive than gasoline powered vehicles
- e.g. Tesla around $100K
Hybrid Cars (e.g. Ford Fusion, Toyota Prius/ RAV4, Honda Accord, and many more)
- half electric engine, half is gasoline powered engine
- city driving (stop and go traffic), use a lot more gas, highly inefficient
- highway driving (drive at 80 to 120km/h, non stop for at least an hour), use much less gas, very efficient
- city driving – electric motor, no gas required
- highway driving – gasoline engine, charge the electric battery
- Mrs. George’s hybrid car needs fill up once a month
- no need to plug in at night to charge the engines
