Square Roots
- we use square roots to find out what two identical numbers multiply together to get the answer. For example
Use your calculator to determine
√144 = 12. That means 12 x 12 = 144
√ 625 = 25 That means 25 x 25 = 625
You should know these “perfect squares” by heart without using your calculator

Application of square roots
1a) This is a prison. Each square has an area of 169m2. The guard tries to fence the perimeter of the prison (the rectangle). How many metre of wire will be needed?
1b) If 7m costs $15.55, how much will that cost to fence the whole prison?
2a) Farmer Joe plants four types of crop in his garden. Each type of crop takes up 289m2 of space. Calculate the perimeter of the whole garden.
2b) The metal fence outside costs $45 per 5 metre, and the fence inside costs $12 per 3.5 metre. How much does it costs to fence the outside and inside?
