Scoring Guide

Starbucks sold 100 drinks (coffee and tea only)  on Sunday. The store took in $277.50.

If each coffee was $3.00 and each tea is $2.50, how many coffee and tea did the store sell?

 

C = coffee                   T = tea             T = 100 – C or C = 100 – T (1 point)

3C + 2.5T = 277.50 (1 point)

3C + 2.5(100 – C) = 277.50 (1 point, equation is figured out correctly)

or         3(100 – T) + 2.5T = 277.50

simplified equation: 3C + 250 – 2.5C = 277.50 (1 point)

or 300 – 3T + 2.5T = 277.50

attempt to solve equation: 0.5C + 250 = 277.50; 0.5C = 27.50; C = 27.50/0.5 = 55 coffee

or 300 – 0.5T = 277.50; –0.5T = –22.50; T = (–22.50)/(–0.50) = 45 tea

 

From the number of coffee, they determine the correct number of tea by subtraction. Vice versa.

100 – 55 = 45 tea or 100 – 45 = 55 coffee (1 point)
