Great to see all of you on Friday

Great to see all of you on Friday.  Even it is a brief gathering, it is nice to see that you are taller and healthier!

The school year is pretty much over, as you (or your parents) will get the report cards by email this week.  If you have been doing the online learning stuff, study for tests and read a bit, your marks are outstanding.

The school won't let me put the honour roll status at the end because it is a shorten school year.  If the average is calculated based on 12 marks (4 language, 2 math, 4 French, 1 science, 1 geography, 1 music), honour rolls students are those who get an average of 80.0% or better.

For those who are interested in applying for the specialized programs or private schools, your entrance exam will take place in late November 2020 to January 2021.  That's six months from now.

In the TDSB, you can only apply to two programs.  Choose carefully, and think of the time that is needed to travel from/ to school every day, twice a day for the next four years.

In most cases, the entrance exam contains three components: math, writing , and/or science, and/or open ended questions.  Whether you will have the science and/or open ended materials really depends on the programs or schools.

For examples, MACS,  and TOPS (enriched math/sci/tech) all have a science component but cyber arts or IB do not, but they ask opened ended questions such as:

"Why do you want to get into this program?"

Who knows what may happen in September?  So this summer is the best opportunity to sharpen your skills and learn some of the grade 8 materials (use Virtual library textbook access), as well as refine your writing skills (they always ask you to PEE, never a narrative story)

Some of the topics from the past include (45 mins to compose with a pencil):
- what is your favourite number
- if you can tight rope walk across any landscape, where will you go?
- your friend is being cyber bullied.  What should you do?
- under what circumstances will you steal a loaf of bread?
- what is a perfect day?
- you were shown a picture of one old, worn out shoe.  Write a story about it (don't describe, but be creative)

These are some of the topics for these exams.  Higher level thinking, a balanced individual, creativity

No, I won't give you more homework this week.  If you want, sign the attendance and it will not be locked at 10pm.  The future is in your hands, not mine.  If there is anything you would like to consult me, send an email or drop by next year.  Kwok will always be there for you.

There is another staff meeting on Monday and I am quite busy finishing up the school year and getting ready to rewrite some of the EQAO questions in the summer.  They just offer a at home job for the next little while.

Until then, stay healthy, be safe and have fun!

Kwok
