Treaty of Utrecht – 1713/1715, an agreement between England and France
- signed with the native tribes as well
- England took control the eastern part of North America (Saskatchewan to Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and all the way to the southern states)
- that means England also takes control of the Acadians (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick area)
- after the treaty, the Acadians must sign on as British objects; but they disagree
- the Acadians don’t want to be an English or a French objects
- British claims Acadia
- in 1755, the British ordered to expel the Acadians.
- 700 British troops attacked and arrested some of the remaining Acadians, killed all live stocks
- Those Acadians who exiled (left homeland, and went somewhere else) to the rural (countryside) area in America, some exiled to northern Quebec (French-controlled region)
- Acadians: mostly white, farmers, hunters, blacksmith, carpenters
- during the exile, many Acadians died from diseases and some drowned when the ships were lost (they had to take the sea routes to the US)
- Acadians were really upset about the British aggression
