Chapter 15

- “. . . besides the wide dark water of the Ohio River.” Is the water dirty? How come it is dark?

- Pal is starting to do something in the beginning of this chapter. What is that?

- who is Sheriff Starkey? What is he looking for?

- what is a warrant? Why do they need a warrant to search Jeb’s house?

- Liza feels dizzy and not well in this chapter, but Jeb’s wife offers her something to make her feel better. What is that?

- what will happen to Liza and Julilly if Sheriff Starkey climb in to the roof of Jeb Brown’s house?

- what are the rails and engines of the Underground Railway? How come Liza and Julilly think that?

- what is the ‘river signal”? Why do they need a signal to cross the river?

- find words from this chapter that have the same meaning as the following:

• run away                   • walk quietly              • mad at, hate                          • very quiet

• complaining noise                • in a hurry, anxiously

Science note

- Alaskan fishermen scoop up most of the salmon before the fish gets to BC

- less salmon to arrive in BC and spawn (lay eggs)

- life span for salmon is about 4 years

- born in small streams in BC interior (spring), migrate downstream to the Pacific Ocean (summer).

- follow the warm water current in the ocean and spend their adulthood there

- warm water has food (krill, shrimp, planktons)

- after four years, migrate back to the rivers in BC, swim upstream and spawn

- less than 1% of hatch eggs manage to come back and spawn
