- “. . . besides the wide dark water of the Ohio River.” Is the water dirty? How come it is dark?
- Pal is starting to do something in the beginning of this chapter. What is that?

- what is a warrant? Why do they need a warrant to search Jeb’s house?
- Liza feels dizzy and not well in this chapter, but Jeb’s wife offers her something to make her feel better. What is that?
- what will happen to Liza and Julilly if Sheriff Starkey climb in to the roof of Jeb Brown’s house?
- what are the rails and engines of the Underground Railway? How come Liza and Julilly think that?
