 Conjunctions link two ideas together.  Instead of writing two separate sentences, each with a simple idea, conjunction combines the two ideas.

 

Learn two conjunctions each day

 

Example#1, When (two simple sentences, with two ideas)

Daddy is tired.

He goes to bed early.

 

When Daddy is tired, he goes to bed early.

Or put conjunction in the middle of the sentence

Daddy goes to bed early when he is tired.

 

Mommy is thirsty.

She drinks a case of Costco water.

 

When Mommy is thirsty, she drinks a case of Costco water.

Or

Mommy drinks a case of Costco water when she is thirsty.

 

Your turn now: put conjunction in the beginning and middle of a sentence

Use when to combine these sentences please

 

1) Daniel is busy.

He has no time to watch You Tube.

 

2) It is hot outside.

Jeremy sweats a lot.

 

3) The police stops the speeding car.

The car is going too fast.

 

Example#2, Since (similar to when and both are interchangeable)

Daniel is sick.

He cannot go to school.

 

Since Daniel is sick, he cannot go to school.

Daniel cannot go to school since he is sick.

 

The barbeque ribs are tasty.

Daddy eats all of ribs.

 

Since the barbeque ribs are tasty, Daddy eats all of it. [note: don’t use the same word twice in the same sentence.  In this case, the word ribs]

Daddy eats all the barbeque ribs since it is very tasty.

 

Use since to combine the following sentences (beginning and middle of the sentence)

 

4) The Millennium Falcon is the fastest ship in the galaxy.

Millennium Falcon gets away from Dark Vader.

 

5) Luke Skywalker is the last Jedi.

He trains Rey to use the light saber properly.

 

6) Daddy did not take a shower for a week.

Daddy has red rashes all over his body.

 

 

Example#3, but (note: do not start a sentence with but.  Put it in the middle of a sentence)

7) The oranges are sweet.

The oranges have seeds.

 

8) Darren eats a lot everyday

Darren is skinny.

 

9) Ryan snored loudly.

Ryan did not sleep well.

 

10) Mary spends a lot of time studying.

Mary fails the test.

 

Example#4, Although or Even though (when using this conjunction, there are two opposite ideas)

James is exhausted.

James refuses to take a break.

 

Although James is exhausted, he refuses to take a break.

Or

James refuses to take even though he is exhausted.

 

It is very hot outside.

He wants to wear his jacket.

 

Although it is very hot outside, he still wants to wear his jacket.

Or

He wants to wear his jacket even though it is very hot outside.

 

11) It is very dark outside.

Daddy insists on going outside without a flashlight.

 

12) Cheryl put sunscreen on this morning.

Cheryl still had sunburn on her face.

 

13) The math problem is difficult.

Daniel is able to figure the answer.

 

14) The milk turns sour

Esther still put it with her cereal.

 

Example#5, Unless (when using this conjunction, there are two opposite ideas)

 

You cannot play with your iPad.

You must finish your homework first.

 

You cannot play with your iPad unless you finish your homework.

Unless you finish your homework, you cannot play with your iPad.

 

Please eat your breakfast quickly.

You will be late.

 

Unless you eat your breakfast quickly, you will be late.

You will be late unless you eat your breakfast quickly.

 

15) You must drive carefully

You will get into a car accident.

 

16) Daniel cannot see clearly.

Daniel should wear his glasses.

 

17) The fish will not survive.

The fish must be put back into the lake.

 

Example#6, Until [you can replace some of the words in the original sentences as long as the meaning is the same]

He cannot eat ice-cream.

He needs to stop coughing.

 

He cannot eat ice-cream until he stops coughing.

Until he stops coughing, he cannot eat ice-cream.

 

Mommy does not want to sleep..

Mommy finishes all the housework.

 

Mommy does not want to sleep until she finishes all the housework.

Until Mommy finishes all the housework, she refuses to go to sleep.

 

Use until to link the following sentences:

 

18) We waited for them outside the Eaton Centre.

Finally, they showed up!

 

19) You have not returned the magazine.

The library will not lend you another book.

 

20) It is snowing heavily.

We cannot drive to Rochester.

 

Example#7, During

 

There is a big thunderstorm outside.

You should not fly a kite in this weather.

 

During a thunderstorm, you should not fly a kite.

Or

You should not fly a kite during a rainstorm.

 

In the winter, it is very cold outside.

We need to turn the heat on.

 

During the cold winter, we need to turn the heat on.

Or 

We need to turn the heat on during the cold winter.
